Day 8: WHALES!

Posted By

I drove up the Kohala coast all the way to the tiny twin towns of Hawi and Kapa’au.  These little villages are made up of near-to-the-road oldy-time buildings that were built during sugar plantation days.  These towns now have little galleries and snack places for the tourists heading to the end of the road and the scenic Pololu Valley.  Driving back along the highway and coming back down to about 1000 ft above sea level, the Pacific is this huge expanse laid out in front of you.  Breathtaking.  Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye at about “1 O’Clock” – Whooosh!  A black humpback tail fin breaks the water’s surface.  It smacks back down into the water, sending a gigantic spray of white water into the air.  Then two tails come out of the water, and a little further away a side fin.  Three whales!!  I stopped and watched along with the other crazies who suddenly jammed on their brakes and pulled into lava fields to get a look.  I completely forgot to take out my camera until they began to move away.  I got the spray, but no fin or tail shots.  Dang!
