I Think It Was Gandhi Who Said, “Be The Shoe You Want To See”

So I’ve been sick for almost 2 weeks with a pretty bad case of bronchitis. Feeling better each day now, and last night was one of the first times I ventured out in public in the last 2 weeks.
I went to the grocery store.
Standing over the peaches and plums, I witnessed an exchanged that made me feel better.

I am standing next to an Asian woman and her 13ish-year-old son.
On the other side of me is a tall, African-American man in his 20s (maybe), sorting fruit and cleaning up the bin (works at store).

Teenager (to Young Man): Hey! I see you’re wearing the new Nikes. Way to go!

(I look at Young Man’s feet – Yep, cleanish Nikes. I look at Teenager’s feet – ALSO cleanish Nikes.)

Teenager and Young Man begin a conversation about the pluses and minuses of Nikes vs other brands, famous people who wear them, etc.

Young Man says his goodbyes and moves off to another of area of produce to work there.

Teenager turns to Mom (who is still picking over peaches next to me): See, Mom?! I told you these were great sneakers. Sneakers CAN bring different cultures, different people together!

Mom: …(forced enthusiasm)…yeah, that’s great…(beat)…you’re still paying me for those sneakers.
Teenager gives exasperated sigh. I unsuccessfully try to stifle a giggle and sort of snort.
Mom looks at me, smiling.
I put out my fist for her to bump, and SHE DOES!

I feel better already!
