End of an Era

Tempest -

My final days on this trip are here.  The final couple of days I spent on the beach, tooling around the North Kohala coast, and going to Deaf Events in Waimea.  Met some interesting and very warm people at these events, welcoming a haole, and inviting me to another get-together - something they didn’t have [...]

Day 8 Night: The Return of TesteGirl

Tempest -

Thunderless Dreams, Part Deux
TesteGirl is back.  She was gone for a little while, but now she’s back.
Some backstory: Late last summer, Thunder and I were driving to Pittsburgh with two friends to see the Mets play the Pirates.  Why we feel compelled to drive 7 hours to watch the Mets suck is a completely [...]

Day 8: WHALES!

Tempest -

I drove up the Kohala coast all the way to the tiny twin towns of Hawi and Kapa’au.  These little villages are made up of near-to-the-road oldy-time buildings that were built during sugar plantation days.  These towns now have little galleries and snack places for the tourists heading to the end of the road and [...]

Day 7-Night: Thunderless Dreams

Tempest -

Okay, so the truth:  I have a very hard time sleeping at night when Thunder isn’t home.  Sometimes he has to be out late for a meeting or a…thing…and I just can’t get to sleep.  So if I’m actually someplace alone - without him anywhere around - restful sleep is sometimes difficult.  Here’s what I [...]

Day 7: Thunder Goes Home

Tempest -

I has a sad…Thunder goes home today, leaving me with 3 more glorious, sunny, convertible-driving, rainbow-searching ocean-ogling days alone in paradise.
Oh, right…but, sad, sad, very sad…

Day 6: Place of Refuge? Not From the Tour Guide, It Wasn’t

Tempest -

We traveled south to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau (Place of Refuge).  This was a safe haven for kapu breakers and criminals in olden times and served as the burial place of former Hawaiian royalty.  Tried to find the promised sea turtles, but they weren’t hanging out by the rocks today.
The tour guide was scary.  I think [...]

Day 5: We Reach The Summit

Tempest -

Mauna Kea is almost 14,000 ft above sea level.  Actually if you count its true base – the ocean floor – it’s the tallest mountain in the world.  Thunder and I took a guided tour up to the top of Mauna Kea this afternoon.  We go up in the afternoon because you want to get [...]

Day 4: The Ocean is Whispering My Name

Tempest -

I sat right on a chaise under some coconut palm trees right at the sea wall.  I sat reading my book.  The Pacific crashed at my feet.  The spray popped up enough to squirt all over my bare feet from time to time.  As it pulled away from the rocks each time, there was this [...]

Day 4: I Look Goooooood in a Convertible!

Tempest -

We rented a Jeep Wrangler over in Hilo because we knew we’d be “off-roading” some of the time.  We had to drive over crusted lava flows to get to the current eruption, and we had to drive down cinder gravel roads to find the out-of-the-way places near Hilo and around the south shore.
But once [...]
